Dear Parents,
Like FDR, this is the place where I speak to you about various topics pertaining to our class. I will keep previous topics up and will add new topics as the year proceeds.
Reading at Home
There have been studies that show that families that read to their children have great benefits. Children develop a love of literature. They learn new vocabulary in the context of a story. Children become better readers when they have been read to. You spend quality time together. But studies show something interesting. When a child turns off the TV or computer and engages in reading, the brain develops in depth and understanding. When a child reads, stops, thinks about what was read, asks himself questions and talks to the parent or adult about the reading, his brain begins to develop these skills. These are the skills that help a child comprehend. These skills help him to understand the characters and why events were important. These skills also spill over into understanding science and history. If you find that your child is struggling with reading in school, I suggest you turn off the computer/wii and get out a book. Read and talk about it together.
